Metallic Lunch: An Analysis of Heavy Metals in the Canadian Diet Metallic Lunch: An Analysis of Heavy Metals in the Canadian Diet is a warning cry to the federal government to respond to the disturbing reality of food pollution. The report calls on Health Canada to develop policies, regulations and monitoring systems that will phase-out heavy metal releases to the environment, and protect our food from toxic pollution. Unpublished federal government data obtained by Environmental Defence Canada shows that Canadians` food is polluted with heavy metals. Canadians are eating lead in many foods - raisins, frozen dinners, ground beef and wine. Lead at any level can cause serious negative health effects, especially for children's behaviour, attentiveness and IQ. Canadians are also eating cadmium, a toxic heavy metal that accumulates in the body and is particularly harmful to the kidney and liver. Foods polluted with cadmium include peanuts and peanut butter, shelled seeds, cabbage and some processed food like potato chips and french fries. |
